Workforce planning in a lotsizing mail processing problem

چکیده
The treatment of mail objects in a mail processing centre involves many operations, in particular sorting by destination. Out of the batching problem that we can identify in such a process, there are also sta4 planning concerns. In this paper, we analyse a treatment area (registered mail) belonging to a mail processing center, where mail objects are treated in a chain production process. The production quantities and the transfer amounts among machines are required to be determined along the daily work period. The objective is to minimize the costs with human resources needed in the process, linked with the lotsizing production plan, by matching sta4 to work requirements. This leads into a lotsizing and workforce problem, for which we propose an integer programming formulation. A case study of a particular treatment area is also discussed. The formulation is adjusted to the speci6c constraints of this case study and some computational results are included, considering average, small and high daily amounts of mail arrived to that particular treatment area. ? 2004 Elsevier Ltd. Workforce planning at USPS mail processing and distribution centers using stochastic optimization
Service organizations that operate outside the normal 8-hour day and face wide fluctuations in demand constantly struggle to optimize the size and composition of their workforce. Recent research has shown that improved personnel scheduling methods that take demand uncertainty into account can lead to significant reductions in labor costs. This paper addresses a staff planning and scheduling pro...

We address the short-term production planning and scheduling problem coming from the glass container industry. A furnace melts the glass that is distributed to a set of parallel molding machines. Both furnace and machine idleness are not allowed. The resulting multi-machine multi-item continuous setup lotsizing problem with a common resource has sequence-dependent setup times and costs. Product...
متن کاملAn enhanced reliability-oriented workforce planning model for process industry using combined fuzzy goal programming and differential evolution approach
This paper draws on the “human reliability” concept as a structure for gaining insight into the maintenance workforce assessment in a process industry. Human reliability hinges on developing the reliability of humans to a threshold that guides the maintenance workforce to execute accurate decisions within the limits of resources and time allocations. This concept offers a worthwhile point of de...
متن کاملCooperative aggregate production planning: a game theory approach
Production costs in general, and workforce and inventory costs in particular, constitute a large fraction of the operating costs of many manufacturing plants. We introduce cooperative aggregate production planning as a way to decrease these costs. That is, when production planning of two or more facilities (plants) is integrated, they can interchange workforce and products inventory; thus, thei...
متن کاملModeling lotsizing and scheduling problems with sequence dependent setups
Several production environments require simultaneous planing of sizing and scheduling of sequences of production lots. Integration of sequencing decisions in lotsizing and scheduling problems has received an increased attention from the research community due to its inherent applicability to real world problems. A two-dimensional classification framework is proposed to survey and classify the m...
